Statement to Client
Meet Carmel McKentry, LPC
Co-Founder | Licensed Professional Counselor | Clinical Supervisor

I am Carmel a Licensed Professional Counselor and co-founder of Parallel Minds Counseling and Consultation. I believe therapy works best when you can show up as your whole, imperfect, complicated, wonderfully human self—and don't have to leave the messy parts at the door.

As an African American and neurodivergent clinician with ADHD, I bring both professional experience and personal perspective to my work. I have worked across a variety of clinical settings, including teen health, federally qualified health centers, behavioral health agencies, and community mental health. Those experiences have shaped my belief that effective mental health care isn't one-size-fits-all. People come from different backgrounds, systems, families, cultures, and experiences—and therapy should make room for all of that.

I enjoy working with adolescents, young adults, and women experiencing perinatal mood and emotional challenges. I also have a strong interest in trauma and helping people understand how their experiences can continue to affect the way they think, feel, relate to others, and move through the world.

My clinical approach is person-centered, trauma-informed, and practical. I frequently incorporate Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) skills into work with clients, drawing on my training as a Certified DBT clinician. But more than following a particular model, I believe in meeting people where they are and figuring out together what will actually be helpful.

And yes—therapy can include laughter.

I use humor when appropriate because sometimes the ability to laugh, even in the middle of something difficult, can be incredibly humanizing. I'm not interested in creating a space where clients feel like they have to say the “right” things or present the polished version of themselves. I want people to feel safe enough to be honest.

Outside of the therapy room, I love spending time with my family, traveling, being outdoors, and enjoying the things that make life feel full.

Why Parallel Minds?

Parallel Minds was created with the belief that mental health care should be personal, culturally responsive, clinically grounded, and human.

You don't have to fit neatly into a box to deserve good care.

You don't have to have the perfect words to explain what's wrong.

And you definitely don't have to have everything figured out before you ask for help.

Come as you are. We'll start there.
